Free activities in Newport to mark Carers Week

Posted on Thursday 30th May 2019

Carers are invited to take part in a series of events, including arts sessions and a walk in the park, in June.

Carers Week is an annual campaign to raise awareness of caring, highlight the challenges unpaid carers face and recognise their contribution.

This year it takes place from 10 to 16 June and, during the week, Newport City Council has organised a number of activities specifically for unpaid carers.

Councillor Paul Cockeram, cabinet member for social services, said: "We know that there a lot of people in the city who care for a relative or friend and it's important that they know they are not alone and that there is support available for them.

"The theme of this year's campaign is 'getting carers connected' whether that is to services, information or their communities, so it is appropriate that our events are organised by the council's community connector team.

"Members of the team will be at the events to offer advice and information so I would urge unpaid carers of all ages living in Newport to try and get to one or more of the activities."

Places are free but must be booked by emailing or telephoning 01633 235650 (weekdays 9am to 4pm).

Newport's events are as follows:

Monday 10 June, 10am-1pm: Carer information event with buffet lunch, Riverside suite, Newport Centre.

Tuesday 11 June, 10am-3pm: Art sessions and light lunch, Riverfront Theatre, Kingsway.

Wednesday, 12 June, 10am-12pm: Carer drop-in for informal chat, advice and peer support, Riverfront Theatre café.

Thursday, 13 June, 1.30pm-2.30pm: Walk in the park - a cuppa, cake and a stroll - Belle Vue Park (meet in pavilion conservatory).

Friday, 14 June, 7.30pm: Buttons Undone panto (over 18s only and booking essential as limited free tickets), Riverfront Theatre.
