Recruitment drive for Civil Enforcement Officers
Posted on Wednesday 20th March 2019
Drivers who park illegally will be fined by Newport City Council from July 1 once Civil Parking Enforcement (CPE) comes into being.
And the council has now launched a recruitment drive to appoint a team of enthusiastic, self-motivated and committed Civil Enforcement Officers to deliver the service.
A formal application for the transferral of parking enforcement powers to the council was made to the Welsh Government In September 2018.
It follows confirmation of Gwent Police’s intention to withdraw from parking enforcement and the council’s decision in January 2018 to apply for civil enforcement powers within the city.
In the meantime traffic management officers are carrying out a programme of work to review traffic orders and check regulations plus reinstate yellow lines and renew signs where needed.
Councillor Roger Jeavons, the council’s cabinet member for Streetscene said: “The transfer of Civil Parking Enforcement powers will allow the council to provide a co-ordinated and consistent approach to enforcement of traffic regulations and will help improve road safety, traffic flow and reduce obstruction.
“We will play our part in working towards safe, vibrant communities for our residents and businesses, so we will be targeting our resources in key areas such as busy town centres, outside schools and other known hotspots, as well as residential areas.”
Newport City Council is one of the Gwent local authorities who have reached an agreement with Rhondda Cynon Taff (RCT) council who will provide administrative and ‘back office’ support for the scheme as well as processing the appeals procedure.
RCT has already been providing this service within their area for a number of years and have the relevant experienced staff and systems established.
